Cognac or Armagnac?

At first glance, they seem identical: two French brandies made with wine, aged in wood, often served after dinner. Yet, the difference between Cognac and Armagnac is greater than you might think.
Cognac comes from the Cognac region and is usually distilled twice in copper stills. This creates a refined , elegant style. Think soft wood notes, vanilla, dried fruit, and a rounded finish. Everything is perfect, everything is polished.
Armagnac comes from Armagnac in Gascony and is typically distilled only once . This gives it a slightly more powerful and distinctive character. You get more character, sometimes a touch of spice, a slightly rougher edge—but that's precisely what makes it interesting.
In short: Cognac is the stylish classic everyone knows. Armagnac is its slightly more idiosyncratic, more temperamental sibling.
